Multidimensional Strategies for Preventing Violent Extremism: Integrating Narratives, Technologies, and Community Engagement

Abstract

Radicalization and violent extremism represent significant global challenges, intensified by the use of digital technologies and social media. This study investigated multidimensional approaches to preventing extremism, organized into five key areas: narrative strategies, regional dimensions, gender sensitivity, digital-physical connection, and community engagement. Through a systematic review of qualitative and quantitative studies, effective initiatives for dismantling extremist discourses and promoting social resilience were analyzed. The results highlight the importance of personalized and culturally adapted interventions combined with regional strategies, community collaboration, and the integration of digital technologies with educational approaches. The study concludes that preventing violent extremism requires integrated, inclusive, and ethically grounded solutions capable of addressing the complexities of risk factors associated with radicalization. Furthermore, it proposes the development of interdisciplinary frameworks to align local and global efforts, fostering more robust and sustainable interventions.

    PhD in Media and Technology at the Faculty of Architecture, Arts, Communication and Design of the São Paulo State University "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP). He has a degree in Public Relations from the University of Sorocaba (Uniso). His research areas include media hermeneutics and new media. Email: tiago.negrao@unesp.br

  • Maria Cristina Gobbi, FAAC / UNESP

    Associate Professor in History of Communication and Media Culture in Latin America from UNESP (2014), with post-doctorate from PROLAM/USP (2008) and doctorate in Social Communication from Universidade Metodista de São Paulo (2002). Associate Professor at UNESP since 2008, she works in undergraduate courses and postgraduate programs in Communication and Media and Technology. She is currently Head of the Journalism Department at FAAC-UNESP (2024-2026) and a FAPESP fellow (2023-2025) with the project "Digital Encyclopedia of Latin American Communicational Thought (PCLA) – WOMEN in Communication Section". Coordinates the CNPq PCLA Research Group and integrates initiatives such as the INCT Caleidoscope and the Red Iberoamericana de Investigadores en Cultura y Sistemas Alimentarios. Director and Editor of the ALAIC Magazine, she is the winner of the Luiz Beltrão Prize (2014) and a CNPq Productivity Fellow, with research focused on the history of communication, cultural diversity, gender and communication in Latin America.
