Institutional Political Power: An Analysis of Gender Quotas in the Central Backlands of Rio Grande do Norte.
Abstract
ABSTRACT: This article analyzes gender quotas and the participation of female parliamentarians in politics in some cities in the central backlands of Rio Grande do Norte. Methodologically, it is a qualitative and descriptive study (Minayo, 2007), also incorporating descriptive statistics (Bardin, 2011; Reis, 1998). Theoretically, we engage with the feminist epistemological perspective (Miguel, 2014) and discussions on the experiences of quotas (Araújo, 1998; Moritz, 2021). We conclude that, as an affirmative action policy, quotas are important for the entry of female parliamentarians into institutional politics; however, there are still many challenges to realizing effective female participation in local government.
