Abstract

The utopian perception of electronic hypertext as a technology capable of revolutionizing reading habits and empowering the reader can only prosper if the nature of technology is taken for granted as a merely instrumental structure and not as a structuring force capable of producing a new cultural economy of values. This paper advances a critique of the instrumental and operational view to be developed as a continuation of the pioneering work proposed by theoreticians such as Martin Rosenberg and Roger Chartier.

Author Biography

Sérgio Luiz Prado Bellei, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

Graduado em Letras (português/inglês) pela Faculdade de Filosofia Ciências e Letras de Marília (1970), mestrado em Letras (Literatura Inglesa) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1973) e é Ph.D em Letras pela University of Arizona (1978). Realizou dois pós-doutorados em teoria literária, sobre teoria do romance (Princeton University) e pós-colonialismo (University of Massachussetts). Atuou como Professor Titular na Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina até o ano de 2008, quando obteve sua aposentadoria. Atualmente é Professor Titular de teoria literária na Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. É pesquisador do CNPq. Suas linhas de ensino e pesquisa englobam: teoria literária e cultural (com ênfase em cibercultura, pós-colonialismo e pós-estruturalismo) e literaturas de língua inglesa.
