First foundation of Buenos Aires, Chronicles, FamineAbstract
Considering the brief years between the first foundation and the subsequent abandonment of Buenos Aires (1536-1541), famine is a dominant and impossible to avoid subject in the profuse literature on this chapter of Spanish expansion in the Plata region. Without being able to get enough food, without maintaining the pacts with the indigenous people that could have guaranteed a certain stability, and being repeatedly attacked, the precarious village found itself in a situation of absolute helplessness, that would continue to get worse over time. Among the chronicles, memoirs and fictions that make up this constellation of testimonies and mythologies, we have reviewed in this work texts such as those written by Ulrico Schmidl, Francisco de Villalta, Luis de Miranda, Ruy Díaz de Guzmán or Isabel de Guevara, among others.
