Australia is a small, remote and relatively powerless province of the anglophone world. Given that a literary system can only come into existence if literary works can find readers, and given that book publishing and distribution are economic activities, literature in Australia has always operated in the shadow of London (its former imperial capital and economic centre) and, more recently, New York. The article examines the effects of this editorial dependence on the publishing of Australian books and on the existence of Australian translations, in comparison with the situation of Brazil and Argentina.
