An analysis of two monumental works of the Brazilian historiography: Os sertões, by Euclides da Cunha, and Grande sertão: veredas, by Guimarães Rosa. The article explores the remnants of the writing of Os sertões – or what was lost between notes on marginal texts and an excess of theoretical references – to arrive at the marginalia produced by Guimarães Rosa during his reading of Euclides’ greatest work and the travel notes collected by the Minas Gerais author for the writing of Grande sertão: veredas, in order to outline a reflection on the limits of thought and language in modernity.
