Panorama of coworkings in federal universities in Brazil

Abstract

The study mapped and characterized coworking spaces in Brazilian federal universities, employing a mixed-methods approach that combined both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Surveys were conducted via the Fala.BR platform, and additional data were gathered through documentary and bibliographic analysis. The results showed that, up to the submission of this article, only 36.2% of the universities had coworking spaces, with a higher concentration in the Southeast and South regions. These spaces displayed wide structural diversity and were primarily targeted at the academic community. A mismatch was observed between university coworking spaces and theoretical models, highlighting challenges related to infrastructure and management. The research underscores the need for policies aimed at strengthening and consolidating these environments.

  • José Ramos Filho, Federal University of Western Pará: Santarém, in Santarém, PA, Brazil.

    Holds a degree in Engineering, specializing in Electrical and Mechanical fields, with a qualification in Control and Automation from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2007) and in Administration from the State University of Santa Catarina (2004). Holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2009). Holds a PhD in Sciences with research focus on Knowledge Management and Innovation for Development from the Federal University of Western Pará and in Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering from the Nova University of Lisbon (co-supervision - 2018). Previously served as director of an engineering company and director of the Innovation Agency NIT at Ufopa. Currently, a professor at the Federal University of Western Pará, working with the Institute of Engineering and Geosciences and contributing to one of the following programs: the Graduate Program in Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer for Innovation - Profnit/Ufopa. Areas of interest include innovation, bioeconomy, intellectual property, innovation environments, and renewable energy.
