Abstract

The aim of this article was to identify the determinants of the employment process for young graduates of Brazilian public higher education institutions. To this end, we applied a questionnaire to a significant sample of 11,458 graduates from 18 federal universities. Using content analysis, the results suggest that the main determinants for graduates to obtain employment are: human capital (graduation degree, previous professional experience, and supplementary courses); cultural capital (proficiency in foreign languages); and social capital (recommendations from university friends, friends from previous work, other friends outside the family, university, and work, and relatives).
