Abstract

This paper explores to what extent the Argentine electorate viewed the 2023 presidential election through the lens of the policy being advanced by Javier Milei — the complete dollarization of the Argentine economy. We adopt a quasi-natural experimental approach to study how the frequency of Google searches for the term "dollar" related to the vote distribution between Milei and his opponent, Sergio Massa, in various regions of Argentina. The findings seem to suggest that an increased interest in the term "dollar" is positively related to votes cast for Milei and negatively with respect to those cast for Massa. This would seem to indicate that the proposal for dollarization was a decisive factor in the election, thereby speaking to the hypothesis that simple solutions towards complex economic problems can bear significant weight in electoral behavior. The work helps understand when radical economic discourses, partnered with effective communication strategies, might mold electoral outcomes in times of economic crisis.
