Abstract

The objective of the present work was to relate the concepts elaborated by the different institutionalist currents with recent anti-immigration rhetoric. The results showed that the creation and dissemination of myths can be instruments of perpetuation of the class structure in favor of elites and that the anti-immigration rhetoric can configure one of these myths, since they seek to point out a culprit for social problems that already existed before the immigrant arrival. It was also found how the treatment of immigrants as “lower class” citizens can rekindle the feeling of patriotism, emulation and belonging in groups of individuals who are also in a precarious economic situation.
