Fernando Ferrari, the Brazilian Labor Party and land reform in the sesmarias of Rio Grande do Sul (1947-1948)

The research aimed to verify whether the agrarian question was already present in the early years of Fernando Ferrari's work, a leader of the Brazilian Labor Party (PTB), in his debut as a state deputy in Rio Grande do Sul, between 1947 and 1950. Through a bibliographical survey, research into his speeches and an interview with a journalist who was his election campaigner, the article explains the significance of Fernando Ferrari within his party, presents his conception of agrarian reform and the context of the PTB in Rio Grande do Sul, the seat of its main directorate. It concludes that agrarian reform entered the debates of this legislature, and Ferrari himself presented a bill on the subject, and always associated it with food production. Through the young man's early career, the institutional role of the Labor Party in the dispute over land reform in Brazil is revealed, even at the beginning of the democratic interregnum of 1946-1964.
