This article analyses the phenomenon of cancellation practices verified in social networks and their implications on freedom of speech, analyzing ambiguity as an instrument of activism and empowerment to minority groups and, at the same time, an instrument of censorship about differing opinions. The analysis adopts the Timothy Garton Ash methodological theoretical framework, hypothetical-deductive method and bibliographical research. As results, the cancel culture must be understood under a new communicative context of interconnection between physical and virtual worlds and special implications hitherto inconceivable on the sphere of individual self-realization and on the stability of representative democracies, pointing to studies regarding the possibilities of self-regulatory solutions or improvement policies under the Habermasian public sphere framework.
