YOUTH AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS: THE 2016 STUDENT UPRISING AT COLÉGIO ESTADUAL LUIZ CARLOS DA VILA

Abstract

The text is a reflection and also a tribute to the students who carried out the 2016 occupation at Colégio Estadual Compositor Luiz Carlos da Vila, located in the Manguinhos favela, in Rio de Janeiro. The occupation was a response to the sociopolitical context marked by austerity measures and the deterioration of public education infrastructure. Students protested poor conditions at the school, including unfulfilled promises of open community spaces and a lack of dialogue between the school administration and the students. This work brings the speech of the subjects who led the occupation and also the collective memory about how these movements forged identities and activists, highlighting the continuous struggles for quality education and active political participation of young people in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.
