Abstract
Benjamin Beil, in his article "Mindscapes: Mental Landscapes", explores how representations of memories in films challenge traditional spatial structures of cinema. He discusses the trend in contemporary cinema where memory sequences have become more complex, creating "navigable" spaces of recollection where elements of cinematic reality penetrate the mental worlds of characters. Beil proposes the concept of "mental landscape" to describe these representations. Notable examples include films such as Spider, Oldboy, Being John Malkovich, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The article details how these mental landscapes are constructed, often blending narrative layers and cinematic realities with the realm of memory. It also analyzes the interaction between reality and recollection in films like Under Suspicion and Millennium Actress, demonstrating how editing techniques and character positioning create spatial and temporal fusions. The representation of subjectivity through these mental landscapes suggests new aesthetic ways to visualize memory and subjectivity in cinema, moving beyond mere stylistic technique to profound psychological expression.
